Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816–1872) was a German traveler and novelist, who emigrated to the United States in 1837. He travelled widely there, and used his experiences in his fiction. This book is one of his earliest works and it has been translated into English as “The Wanderings and Fortunes of some German Emigrants” (New York, 1848).
The book is accompanied by a detailed map of the United States, shows the free and the slave states and even shows the northern part of Cuba.
