Latvian Avant-Garde Magazine, Pāvils Vīlips’ Copy

Kreisa fronte. [Left Front.] 1928. No. 1–6.

Rigā: Latvju Kultura, 1928. Cover designed by Eriks Kalis. Illustrated with photographic artworks. Complete set of the first year, belonged to Pāvils Vīlips. First edition. Published in only 1400 copies. Each issue in original, different illustrated wrappers. Each issue with 48 pages. Vīlips ownership entry (signature and date) in first two issues, with his underlinings and notes in each number. All brochures in fine condition.

First six issues, the entire first year of “Kreisā fronte”, the first substantial leftist Latvian-language journal with international aspirations. Its concept and format followed Vladimir Mayakovsky’s magazine the “LEF” and the design of “Novy Lef”. Only 17 issues were published between 1928 and 1930 (the last one was double), when it was banned by the authorities, and Laicens launched his new magazine the “Tribīne”.

The content of “Kreisā fronte" was more cultural than political, contained avant-garde literary elements as well as photographic artwork.

This set of the magazine belonged to Pāvils Vīlips (1901–1979) the Latvian poet, essayist and translator. In the 1920s Vīlips was member of the Latvian expressionist group of writers who focused on the aspects of contemporary urban life. “Romantika Autobusā” and “21 Dzeja”, his books of poems are two remarkable example of this movement.

Linards (Petrovich) Laicens (1883-1938) was a Latvian Expressionist writer and poet, active in politics as a member of Communist party. He was the editor or the leftist Avant-garde journals “Kreisā Fronte” and “Tribīne”.
