Kalis (Eriks Kālis 1904–1939) was a graphic artist and scenographer, member of the Riga Artist Group. For this graphic design of the book (the front and rear cover, and the full page illustration) he combined geometric forms with photography into an abstract architectural composition, that is inspired by Lajos Kassák’s and other modernists from east-central Europe. The photographs of Latvian prisoners refer to the contents of the book, which is about the tsarist prisons that were established in Riga following the 1905 revolution.

Linards (Petrovich) Laicens (1883-1938) was a Latvian Expressionist writer and poet. He was active in politics as a member of the Communist party. He was the editor or the leftist Avant-garde journal “Tribine”. Laicens was imprisoned several times in Latvia as a Communist, in 1932 he fled to the Soviet Union where he was perished during the Great Purge in 1938, likewise Kālis.
