“The book’s authors, photographer Kata Kálmán (1909–1978) and the writer Iván Boldizsár were members of a group of progressive intellectuals in the 1930s – composed of sociologists, artists, writers and researchers – who sought to raise public awareness about the plight of exploited agricultural and industrial workers. Between 1934 and 1937, Kálmán and Boldizsár investigated the lives of farmworkers in Hungary. Kálmán made portraits of them – men, women and children – while Boldizsár interviewed each of the subjects, and the result, consisting of 24 portraits and interviews, were published in Tiborc. The book’s title emanates from the archetypal [Hungarian] peasant character [...].” (Parr-Badger I. 140.)
