Franz Schams’s extensive survey of Hungarian viticulture, one of the principal early nineteenth-century accounts of the country’s vineyards, grape varieties, wine production, and wine-growing regions.
First published in two volumes in 1832–1833 by Otto Wigand, Ungarns Weinbau was reissued by Heckenast in 1835 as the Hungarian section of Schams’s enlarged survey of viticulture throughout the Austrian Empire, Der Weinbau des Oesterreichischen Kaiser-Staates in seinem ganzen Umfange.
Schams (1780–1839) was among the central figures in the development of Hungarian viticulture and oenology during the Reform Era. Based on extensive travel and observation, the present work surveys the principal wine-producing districts of the Kingdom of Hungary from statistical, topographical, natural-historical, and economic perspectives. It discusses individual vineyards and regions, local grape varieties, cultivation and pruning, yields and costs, harvesting and vinification, cellaring, and the qualities and commercial prospects of the resulting wines. Among the regions treated are Buda and its surroundings, Sopron, Somló, Baranya and Villány, Szekszárd, Eger, and other established wine-growing districts.
