“A’ szegény Jakab, kinek elegendője volt.(Poor Jacob, Who Had Enoug) (The Way to Wealth)

Pest: Trattner János Mátyás, 1836. First Hungarian translation of Benjamin Franklin’s The Way to Wealth. In contemporary paper. 1t.+(6)+271+(3)p.+1t.+301+(7)p. Very good condition.

A particularly notable feature of this volume is its inclusion of what is believed to be the first Hungarian translation of Benjamin Franklin’s The Way to Wealth. Published in 1816 under the title A’ szegény Jakab, kinek elegendője volt (“Poor Jacob, Who Had Enough”), the text presents Franklin’s celebrated advice on industry, thrift, and prudent living. The translation appears here as part of Kis János’s Ifjúság barátja, a collection of instructive and entertaining pieces intended for young people of both sexes. Franklin’s text was adapted for a Hungarian readership and presented without naming Franklin as its author. The appearance of The Way to Wealth in Hungarian at such an early date is a noteworthy document of the circulation of Enlightenment ideas in Hungary.
