Monotypes are prints created using a printing process but produced as unique, single copies. Korniss first carved the designs into linoleum, then filled the lines with oil paint or enamel—and later watercolor or tempera—before pressing the paper onto the surface by hand. The resulting print features patterns formed not only by the lines but also by the intermingling of paints with varying compositions; consequently, no two identical compositions can be produced, even when pulled from the same matrix. (In many instances, the artist also painted directly onto the sheet.) Extremely rare.
