Stefánia (Stefi) Vermes was born on January 29, 1921, in Budapest, Hungary. She came from an intellectual family that placed great emphasis on the purity and cultivation of the Hungarian language.
She attended the Mária Terézia Girls’ Secondary School and later studied Hungarian and Latin at Pázmány Péter University in Budapest between 1939 and 1940.
