Three Early Mozart Editions: Une Sonate pour le Clavecin ou Piano-Forte (KV 311/284c); Ariette avec Variations (KV 500); Grande Sonate pour le Pianoforte (KV 498a). Bound with Works by Contemporary Composers.
Vienna, Paris: ca. 1790s–1810s. Oblong folio compilation of engraved sheet music, comprising twelve works. In contemporary hardpaper binding. In very good condition.
Compilation of twelve piano works, including three rare early Mozart editions and Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart’s Don Giovanni variations.
Substantial compilation of twelve piano works, anchored by three significant early editions of Mozart’s music: an early Viennese variant of the Sonata in D major (KV 311), the scarce second edition of the Ariette avec Variations (KV 500), and the 1805 first posthumous printing of the Grande Sonate (KV 498a). These are accompanied by Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart’s VII Variations sur le Menuette de Don Juan, based on the celebrated minuet from Don Giovanni, along with additional works by prominent contemporaries, including Koželuch, Steibelt, Häßler, Clementi, and Freystädtler. Together, they provide a vivid snapshot of Viennese keyboard publishing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
KV 311/284c – Sonata in D major
The Sonata in D major (KV 311/284c), composed in Mannheim in 1777, appears here under the imprint Une Sonate pour le Clavecin ou Piano-Forte… Oeuv. [Op. 34] (Vienna, Magazin de Musique, 1795). Though designated “Op. 34” on the title-page (here the number left blank), the work is in fact Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 9. This edition is one of the earliest Viennese prints of the piece, unknown to Köchel, and corresponds to RISM A/I M 6775 and M 6760. The two recorded RISM entries (one with plate number, two copies known; the other without, single copy known) appear to represent the same edition, both of extreme rarity. No copy is preserved in the Stiftung Mozarteum. The date is confirmed by Alexander Weinmann, Verzeichnis der Verlagswerke des musikalischen Magazins in Wien 1784–1802 “Leopold Kozeluch” (Österreichischer Bundesverlag, Vienna, 1955).
KV 500 – Ariette avec Variations
The Ariette avec Variations (KV 500) was first issued by Artaria in Vienna in 1786, as Ariette avec Variations pour le Clavecin ou Piano Forte par W. A. Mozart. No. 13. The only known copy of this 1786 first edition appeared at auction (Pierre Bergé, Paris, 2015), and it is otherwise virtually unobtainable. The present copy is the second edition, published by Artaria in 1793, with plate number 92 (our copy slightly overtrimmed at the lower edge, thus missing the plate number, and occasionally the staves). The work comprises twelve variations on an Allegretto in B-flat. No copy is preserved in the Stiftung Mozarteum. RISM A/I M 7070.
KV 498a – Grande Sonate in B-flat major
The Grande Sonate in B-flat major (KV 498a) was published posthumously in Vienna in 1805 by the Bureau d’Arts et d’Industrie, under the title Grande Sonate pour le Pianoforte… Oeuvre posthume (plate no. 443). The edition is documented in the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum, Salzburg (Rara C 25.04/01; AC09154756) and in the Státní oblastní archiv, Třeboň (CZ-K 262). Köchel identifies it as a Frühdruck, combining two piano pieces in B-flat major and drawing upon material from KV Anh. C 25.04–C 25.05, with connections to movements from KV 450, KV 456, and KV 595. Bibliographical reference: RISM A/I M 6930.
Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart – VII Variations pour le Menuette de Don Juan
Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart’s VII Variations pour le Piano-Forte sur le Menuette de l’Opera Don Juan (Vienna, Magasin de l’Imprimerie chymique, [after 1805]; plate no. 148) was published under the name “Wolfgang Amadée Mozart fils.” The variations are based on the Menuetto from the Act I ballroom scene of Don Giovanni (KV 527), one of the opera’s most celebrated dance movements. The precise dating of this edition remains uncertain. It is of great rarity: we have traced only one institutional copy, preserved at the Diözesanbibliothek Salzburg.
Together, these editions trace Mozart’s reception in the 1790s and illustrate the posthumous efforts of Viennese publishers to consolidate his scattered keyboard works for a growing domestic market, while also marking the emergence of his son Franz Xaver as a composer.
