With the circular ink stamp of the Bibliothèque de Tsarkoe Selo on the second flyleaf verso, featuring the double-headed imperial eagle and French inscription. Contemporary binding in red long-grain morocco. Smooth spine with gilt compartments featuring grapevine and leaf tooling; boards framed with a wide gilt roll of vinicultural motifs; all edges gilt; gilt fillets on board edges; pale blue silk endleaves with gilt dentelles (wave and straight fillets). VII [1] 411 [1] [4] p. With an engraved frontispiece depicting the Elise Fountain (Elisebrunnen) and a large hand-coloured folding map of Aachen. Binding well preserved and structurally sound, with light rubbing to corners and joints and minor scuffing to the lower board. Interior generally clean, with occasional foxing. Discoloration at the gutter on endpapers. Retains original tissue guard after the frontispiece. Folding map intact and neatly coloured by hand. Silk endleaves slightly oxidised at the edges. The Tsarskoye Selo stamp remains sharp, with light offsetting.

A first edition of Johann Peter Joseph Monheim’s detailed study of the therapeutic mineral springs of Aachen and surrounding regions, examined from historical, geological, chemical, and medical perspectives. Includes a large regional map and a frontispiece view of a principal spa structure.

The Tsarskoye Selo Library formed part of the collections housed in the imperial residences of the Romanov dynasty. Originating in the late 18th century and expanded under Alexander I and Nicholas I, it was primarily located in the Alexander Palace, one of the principal residences of the Russian imperial family.
