Breve difesa dei diritti delle donne ("Brief Defense of Women's Rights") is a significant contribution to the Early Modern Italian debate on gender. Although the eighteenth century was pivotal for the advancement of human rights, culminating in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in 1789, that document did not extend equal rights to women. This omission prompted numerous responses across Europe, including this Italian treatise by Rosa Califronia. Likely a pseudonym, the author's true identity remains unknown.
Califronia argues that women should have access to human rights and education, asserting that their intellectual capacities are equal to those of men.
