Scarce Spanish manuscript on the history of the Spanish Inquisition.

Written in 1652 by José de Rivera, a secretary of the Council of the Supreme Inquisition. The treatise begins with a brief reference to the medieval Inquisition in Aragon, and the description of the establishment of the Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Castile in 1478. After this, Rivera delineates the history of various tribunals, including those on the American continent such as in Lima, Mexico, and Cartagena de Indias, and records the appointments of inquisitors, and other chief personnel. The final part of the work deals with the Council of the Inquisition and introduces the current members of Diego de Arce’s council in 1652, and its various offices. The last few paragraphs of the chapter on the Grand Inquisitors are not part of the present copy. We could find copies of the manuscript only in the holding of Biblioteca Nacional de España (Mss: 2278, 6591, 7669, 7669).
