Manuscript account of the Languedoc cloth export to the Levantine markets during the first half of the 18th century, and additional import tables.

The maritime export of Languedoc cloth from the harbors of Marseille to the Levantine markets had a long tradition dating back to the sixteenth century. The present manuscript covers the last decades of its heyday, the first half of the 18th century.

The account is divided into three lengthy tables, the first, Etat des Draps de Languedoc qui ont été embarquées à Marseille […], shows the amount of cloth exported to the Levantine and Barbarian échelles, the Middle Eastern and North African ports of the Ottoman Empire, designated for the French traders mainly from Marseille, in the years between 1708 and 1752.

The second, Retours, is a complex table of the import, indicates the number of ships and the amounts of the returned goods from various échelles, for the years between 1708 and 1750. The third table, Récapitulation Générale, is a summary of the previous table, displaying the total amount of the imports for each year between 1708 and 1750, certain years assigned for French and foreign ships.

A similar, but not identical table of Etat des Draps de Languedoc appeared in print in Remarques sur plusieurs branches de commerce et de navigation (1758, Amsterdam; and the same in Encyclopedie methodique 1785, Paris), with numbers rounded and no data for the years of 1751 and 1752.

We couldn’t trace any printed versions of the latter two tables.
