Promotional Leaflet for George Grosz’s Hintergrund.

[Ca. 1928]. Promotional leaflet. Illustrated on verso. Text in German. 104 × 152 mm. Minor tear at upper and right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.

Illustrated promotional leaflet for Hintergrund (Backdrop), a portfolio of17 prints by George Grosz.

Consisting of 17 prints, the portfolio was based on Grosz’s designs for a staging of The Good Soldier Švejk at the Piscator-bühne, in 1928. The series presents the devastating effects of the war on the land and its inhabitants, criticizing the institutions, such as the government and the church in a caricaturistic manner. After publication, the creator, George Grosz, together with the publisher, John Heartfield and Wieland Herzfelde were arrested and consequently tried for blasphemy.

Present flyer was published during the appeals when the portfolio was temporarily available again. The German text reads: “Three of these drawings were confiscated on charges of blasphemy. First convicted, Grosz and his publisher were acquitted in the appeal hearing. The public prosecutor has applied to the Reich Court to appeal this ruling. The folder is therefore temporarily available again. […]”

The verso is illustrated with a reproduction of one of the prints.
