Original book dummy of The Miller, his Wife and their Millstones, with numerous trial proof illustrations by El Lissitzky.

Present work is a book dummy of the Yiddish children’s book, The Miller, his Wife and their Millstones (published: Kyiv: Idisher Folks Farlag, 1919 and Warsaw: Tarbut Publishing House, 1922 in Hebrew), illustrated by El Lissitzky, and written by Benzion Raskin. The drawings are identical to the published version, the text arrangement slightly differs from it. Created by the author, an early, unpublished version of the Hebrew translation in ink is mounted on some of the pages on top of the Yiddish text. At the beginning of his carrier, Raskin wrote his books in Yiddish and translated them to Hebrew.

An extra bifolio of p. 5 and 6 is also included in the portfolio as well as 34 separate trial proof. Each illustration of the book is presented separately, in two to four different versions.

El Lissitzky and Raskin signed a contract for 11 children’s books with the Idisher Folks Farlag in 1919 of which only three titles were published, including the present work, Di milner, di milnerin, un di milshtayner, Di hun vos hot gevolt hoben a kam, and Der Bar. All books were a part of the series “Kindr-Gartn” (Kindergarten), published with the same publisher’s device (A rooster on a roof, crowing and holding the sign “far kleyne kinder” – “for small children”), designed by El Lissitzky. This portfolio includes three different versions of the device, with the text translated to Hebrew, one of them hand finished, with paint and paper glued on it.
