The first Spanish edition of the libretto for Rossini’s Otello, an imitation of Shakespeare's drama by Francesco Maria Berio di Salsa.

The story of the libretto by Berio di Salsa (1765–1820) differs greatly from Shakespeare's Othello. Rossini’s Otello was first staged in Naples in 1816. This edition of the libretto accompanied the 1827-premiere of the opera in Madrid at the Teatro de La Cruz, with Basilio Basili singing Otello.

The translation of Shakespeare’s tragedy was first published in Spanish a few years earlier, in 1815.

Scarce, WorldCat locates only a copy at the Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington), and another one at the Biblioteca Nacional de España (Madrid).
