First edition of Péter Nádas’s first book, containing two early stories, A Biblia (The Bible) and A pince (The Cellar).
Péter Nádas (1942–2026) was one of the major figures of contemporary Hungarian and European literature. His work received wide international recognition, particularly through Emlékiratok könyve (A Book of Memories, 1986; English translation, 1997) and Párhuzamos történetek (Parallel Stories, 2005; English translation, 2011). Susan Sontag famously described A Book of Memories as “the greatest novel written in our time.”
The two largely autobiographical stories collected in A Biblia draw upon Nádas’s childhood experiences in postwar Communist Hungary. They already introduce subjects and motifs that would recur throughout his later writing and reach their fullest development in Emlékiratok könyve: the garden and domestic world, childhood sexuality, the neighboring girl, the dog, parents working within the Communist state administration, and the tension between private experience and public falsehood. The volume marks the beginning of a literary career that would establish Nádas as an author of international stature.
