[Photo Album] The Visit of the Hungarian National Ballet and Folk Ensemble to the People's Republic of China, in 1952.

[China?]: 1952. Elegant hardcover photo album, covered with red Chinese brocade, containing 29 black and white photographs in different sizes (portraits: ca. 120 × 167 mm; other images: 100–110 × 65–95 mm; and a small ID picture). 22 album card leaves; 29 b/w photographs. Artistically restored. Binding in very good condition. Some leaves with nicks. The photographs are in fine condition.

A unique collection of photographs including portraits of Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, and other party leaders; a documentation of the visit of the Hungarian folk dance ensemble in China in 1952.

The album starts with two large portraits of Mao Zedong and Zhou De; Mao appears in six additional pictures together with other party leaders such as Zhou De, Zhou Enlai, Zhang Wentian, Liu Shaoqi, Lin Boqi, and others, most likely during the May Day parade of 1952 at the Tiananmen Square. The further images are showing the Folk Dance Ensemble during performances or the moments offering gifts to Mao, and their visits to tourist attractions in Beijing.

The Hungarian National Ballet and Folk Ensemble was a state dance group founded in 1950. The Ensemble’s first major tour outside Europe was in China in the spring of 1952, where they held 40 performances within less than two months. The pictures of the present photo album showing the highlights of this journey. Due to its features and the content, we surmise that the album was a gift of one of the Chinese hosts to a Hungarian member of the dance group.
