The poems of Cuaderno de Poesia Negra are exemplifying the traditions of Afro-Cuban poetry, a subject Emilio Ballagas (1908–1954) studied in depth and later published two anthologies about the situation of Afro-American poetry and the economic and social conditions of Afro-Cubans.

Present copy is inscribed to Cuban composer and conductor of Spanish derivation, José Ardévol (1911–1981), the director of the Orquesta de Camara de La Habana at that time.

Cover and three illustrations by the Avant-Garde artist, Domingo Ravenet (1905–1969), who was one of the pioneers of modernist Cuban art.

The other illustrator of the book, Ernesto Gonzalez Puig (1913–1988) was a self-taught modernist painter.
