“Társadalmi forradalom” was the first and only Hungarian anarchist newspaper. It was found, edited and later sponsored by the anarchist count Ervin Batthány. The newspaper was run for five years between 1907 and 1911, 94 numbers were published. It’s main directives were organizing strikes and boycotts, facilitate the social and ecomomic awareness and antimilitarism. In the beginning it was published and printed at Battyhány’s land at Bögöte in western Hungary, but very soon already from the eleventh number it was published in the capital, Budapest. Beside the Hungarian thinkers the most eminent figures of the anarchist and syndicalist movement were published in the newspaper, among others Peter Kropotkin, Jean Grave, Georges Yvetot, Emile Pouget and Enrico Malatesta.

Ervin Batthyány (1887–1945) was a Hungarian anarchist nobleman. He studied in London and Cambridge, where he became personally acquainted with the prominent anarchist Peter (Pyort) Kropotkin. He has been influenced by the ideas of Edward Carpenter, William Morris and Leo Tolstoy as well, that turned him toward the Narodnik Movement, communism and anarchism. After he went back to Hungary and moved to his land Bögöte in 1905, he opened a free reform school for peasant children upon the same social principles as such schools were organized in England and Russia. He found a socialist publisher and established a printing house at the land, and planned to publish a political newspaper, a review and a socialist lexicon that could be used by the common people. The first numbers of “Társadalmi forradalom” were printed there. In 1910 he moved to England to his land at Lyme Regis and sold the Bögöte-land. He was active in the pacifist and anarchist movements during WWI, but later he gave up his political activities.
