Ten vintage press photos, documenting the meetings of Chinese (among them Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai) and Hungarian Communist leaders in China, in 1957 and 1959

Nine pictures are showing important moments of János Kádár’s 1957 visit to China. This tour was the second visit of the newly elected first secretary of the Hungarian Communist Party to any foreign countries (the first was to the USSR), after the repression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 October. Kádár’s first diplomatic meetings were crucial for the new Hungarian Communist leadership to show and consolidate the Party’s legitimacy and power within and outside the country. The images depicting the meetings between the Hungarian delegates and their Chinese hosts, among them Mao and Zhou. The majority of the pictures show Zhou with Kádár attending official events like diplomatic meetings or a military parade.

The photograph from 1959 shows Chairman Mao Zedong shaking hands with the Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Münnich in Beijing. Münnich led the Hungarian delegates at the notable occasion of signing the Chinese-Hungarian Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation on 6 May 1959. Hungary supported China’s domestic and international aspirations, and the two countries already signed several less significant agreements in the spirit of mutual recognition throughout a decade, since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. This meeting was the last visit of a Hungarian Prime Minister to China in the 20th century.
