Himmelreich was the co-founder of the International Union of Bartenders in the Czechoslovak Republic (a photo of the members is included as an illustration to the book), in 1921. His handbook, the present book, American Drinks, which was published in the same year, lists more than 250 recipes, many with the name of its inventor (11 by Himmelreich himself) with photographic illustrations of the art deco interiors of the Czech bars that Himmelreich helped to set up, Bar Gri-Gri and Juliš in Prague, Blaue Maus (Modrá myš) in Ostrava (Ostrau), and the bar of Hotel Eiche in Liberec (Reichenberg) and contains forty pages of wonderfully designed advertisements of bar tools, beverages, and bars.

Scarce, WorldCat locates only one copy in the National Library of the Czech Republic, we could trace another copy in the EUVS Digital Collection.
