“One voice speaks for six million – the voice not of a sage or a poet but of an ordinary little girl”- wrote Ilya Ehrenburg about the diary of Anne Frank.

Born in 1929, Anne was given a diary for her thirteenth birthday, a few weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Anne took her diary with her and kept working on it until 1 August 1944, three days before their arrest. In March 1944 she heard an appeal on the radio from a Dutch minister in exile to hang on to important documents, so that it would be clear after the war what they all had experienced during the German occupation. Accordingly, she started to rewrite her diary, omitted parts and added many new ones, and planned to publish it after the war, with the title Het Achterhuis, or The Secret Annex. The family was arrested by the Nazis, on 4 August 1944, and were transported to concentration camps. In October or November 1944, Anne was transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died a few months later. After their arrest, her writings were found, and the diary under the title Het Achterhuis was published on 25 June 1947, edited by Anne’s father, Otto Frank, the sole survivor of the family.
