Tadeusz Borowski’s copy of Tucholsky’s critical book about the anti-democratic tendencies in the Weimar Republic. With cover and layout designed by John Heartfield.

In his richly illustrated book, German-Jewish journalist and writer, a left-wing democrat and pacifist, Kurt Tucholsky (1890–1935) sharply criticizes the anti-democratic political processes of the late 1920’s Germany and the threat of National Socialism. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Tucholsky’s work was among the first ones to be banned as “un-German", and burned. He was also one of the first authors whose German citizenship was revoked.

The cover and the layout of the book was designed by the German visual artist, John Heartfield (1891–1968), famous for his anti-Nazi and anti-fascist photomontages.

Provenance: With Tadeusz Borowski’s ownership stamp on the front pastedown. Tadeusz Borowski (1922–1951), a Polish writer and journalist, well known for his wartime poetry and stories dealing with his experiences as a prisoner at Auschwitz.
