First edition of Gaffarel’s opus magnum on Jewish Astrology, Kabbalah, and various magical beliefs, illustrated with two folding celestial maps.

“Curiositez inouyes” is Gaffarel’s most important and influential work, dealing with Oriental Talismans, Hebrew, Egyptian and Arabic Astrology, the Kabbalah and star reading. The book is divided into three parts, of which the first is devoted to defending the orientals, especially the Jews against several classic calumnies, the second is a defense of Persian talismanic sculpture and astrology and the third concerns the horoscope of the Patriarchs and the Astrology of the Ancient Hebrews. The book includes two folding celestial maps, or Cabalistic planispheres, where the constellations form Hebrew letters, which could be read by those with the right knowledge.

Jacques Gaffarel (1601–1681) was a French priest, Orientalist, and astrologer, one of the chief exponents of 17th-century Christian Kabbalism. Born in Provence educated at the Universities of Valence and Paris where he received the degree of Doctor of canon law. Gaffarel became the librarian of Cardinal Richelieu, and as a scholar of Oriental languages, he defended the Kabbalah against the critical treatment of the contemporary Christian scholars.
