Tinted edges. a–b8, C–Z8, AA–HH8; ff. 247, (1). Four blank pages bound before the title page, with handwritten bibliographical notes by two different hands in ink and pencil. With Victor Léonard Charner’s (1797–1869; French Navy Admiral) bookplate on the inner front panel. Spine with small damages at the hinge. Slightly over trimmed, with occasional effect on the first or last letters of printed margin notes, but no effect on legibility. Title page with contemporary or somewhat later crossed ownership inscriptions. BB5 torn at the side edge. Few pages lightly browned. Otherwise in very good condition.

Johann Eck’s early anti-Protestant writing in which he defenses the doctrine of purgatory.

De Purgatorio was first published in Rome in 1523. This, 1548 Paris edition was shared between five printers, three copies known of this one by Jean Ruelle.
