Itier’s pioneering work on wine trade between China and France.

Jules Itier (Eugéne Alphonse; 1802–1877) was a French diplomat, customs inspector and a pioneer daguerreotypist. He served as inspector of customs in France and Africa, and in 1843 he was appointed leader of a commercial mission to China. As an amateur daguerreotypist he took several pictures of Macao, Hong Kong and mainland China, which are known to be the earliest remaining photographs of the region. After his return to France, beside several shorter works related to China, he published a three volume book, “Journal d'un voyage en Chine en 1843, 1844, 1845, 1846“ (Paris, 1848-1853).

Scarce, we could trace only two copies in institutional holdings, both in France.
