Panorama View of Birkenau; Early Postcards of the Auschwitz Memorial

[Postcard] Collection of Four Postcards. Series I: The Concentration Camp “Oswiecim” (Oświęcim).

[Auschwitz? / Krakow?]: Państwowego Muzeum w Oświęcimiu, [1947?]. Original, vintage, black and white postcards. Text in four languages: Polish, Russian, English, French. 138 × 89 mm., and a fold-out panorama postcard with measures of 277 × 89 mm. Yellowed, due to ageing. One with brown spots on verso. One written in ink but unsent. Overall in very good condition.

Early photographic documentation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

A collection of four photo-postcards, published by the recently established Auschwitz Museum in 1947.

The images are not credited, however a larger version of the fold-out panorama view of Birkenau (“The Panorama of Brzezinka (Birkenau) (Section B)”) was also published in the photo-booklet “Oświęcim-Brzezinka. K.L. Auschwitz-Birkenau. (Krakow, 1948) wherein it is attributed to Stanisław Kolowca, a prominent architecture photographer from Kraków,. The rest of the photos are presumably part of the collection of the 138 photographs that Stanislaw Mucha took in 1945 as evidence to be used during the trials of Nazi war criminals. These images are showing “The Gateway of the Chief Camp” with the infamous worlds “Arbeit Macht Frei”, “The Court of Executions of the 11th Barrack” and “The Crematory (The Place pf the Revolt of 1943)” .

Scarce and early collection of Holocaust documentation.
