[Postcard] Early Postcard of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

[Auschwitz? / Krakow?]: Państwowego Muzeum w Oświęcimiu, [1947?]. Original, vintage, coloured postcard. Text in Polish and French. Stamped on verso by Stowarzyszenie "Opieka nad Oświęcimiem” (Association for the Maintenance of the Auschwitz Memorial Site) and by the Museum, dated on May 14, 1948. Numbered. 95 × 148 mm. Edges slightly chipped with a small loss. Yellowed due to ageing. Overall in good condition.

Dated on the May 14, 1948, the day of the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel.

One of the earliest publications of the Auschwitz Memorial which was opened on June 14, 1947.

The postcard shows the map and legend of the Auschwitz concentration camp (Auschwitz I). Numbered and stamped on recto (probably it served as ticket) on May 14, 1948, the day of the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. Poland was among the first countries to recognize the new state on May 18, 1948.

The map was designed by Tadeusz Myszkowski, a former Auschwitz prisoner, who later participated in the process of the organization of the museum and memorial. He collected the art works made in the camp, that formed the basis of the future art collection of the museum.
