The first German history of the American Revolutionary War.

Sprengel (1746–1803) was a German polymath and geographer very interested in the history of the British colonies in North America and the War of Independence. His writings concentrated on the colonies, and the revolutionary events.

Sprengel’s books satisfied the increasing need of information about the United States and the new nation in Germany, especially after the return of the Hessian veterans, who fought in the Revolutionary War.

The map that accompanies the book is the reduced version of Faden's 1783 map of the United States. It shows the States, the territory east of the Mississippi, and part of Louisiana with an inset of Newfoundland.
