A very early emigration guide for the German pioneer settlers to Adelaide, South-Australia, with a lithographed map.

Emigration to South-Australia from Germany began in the late 1830s, the first ship with German emigrants landed at Port Adelaide in 1837. The early immigrants were Lutherans escaping from religious persecution of the Prussian state. After the death of Prussian King Frederick William III in 1840, the religious reason changes to economic, and the need for reliable information about South-Australia increased.

This book is one of those early publications that contains accurate facts about the climate, the geography, the flora and fauna and the history of South-Australia. It also contains reliable and practical information about the currency, the possible salary for various professions, the price of the basic goods, the custom rates, and the details of the ship travel, that were necessary for the immigrants.

Very less is known about the author, Eugen Laun. In the foreword he refers to his earlier, seventeen-page book “Kurze darstellung von Süd-Australien und Port Adelaide” (Bremen, 1847) and also to his former journey to Adelaide on Leontine, an early emigrant ship with 262 passengers in 1848, which was already his third mission to Australia. Formerly he served as Captain on Heerheebhoy Rustomjee Patel in 1845 with 262 passengers on board and in 1846 with about 250 passengers. These were among the very first German emigrant ships to South-Australia and the first exclusively from Bremen.

A very early, scarce, important publication about South-Australia and the German pioneers.
