Futurist Typographical Design

Noc-Dzien. / Noc-Dzień. Mechaniczny instynkt elektryczny. [Night-Day. Mechanical Electrical Instinct.]

Kraków: Gebethner i Wolff (Czasu), 1922. First edition. In original paper. (4), 3–41, [1] p. In fine condition.

A collection of futurist poems by Tytus Czyżewksi (1880–1945) the chief figure of the Formist movement.

A special, futurist typographical design characterizes the book. Most of the poems are printed in two columns that are intermitted by typographical elements. The book contains Czyżewksi’s famous concrete poem the “Mechaniczny ogród” (Mechanic Garden), where names of flowers are printed into squares on different sized stems and above them floats a double square as the two wings of a “paź królowej”, a swallowtail.

Important piece of Polish avant-garde books.
