As a result of the decree of the National Assembly that removed all the privileges of Compagnie des Indes (French East Indian Company) on April 3, 1790 the company fall into decline, grappled with financial challenges. With this act the National Assembly helped it by the reimbursement of its shares in the value of 1,177,200 livres.

To put an end to the monopolies of companies involved in slave trade like Compagnie des Indes was an important step toward abolishment of slavery.
