May Day or International Worker’s Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Massacre which was a demonstration that took place on May 4, 1886 at Haymarket Square in Chicago. Began as a rally in support the striking workers and ended up in a riot with numerous casualties both civilians and police officers. In 1889 the Second International decided to commemorate this event and the fights of the “Eight-Hour Day” movement annually on May 1. In Manfred Gebhardt’s book “Ein Hauch von Maienblüte. Postkarten der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung zum 1. Mai.” (Berlin, 1989.) the “Völkermai” is demonstrated as the first appearance of May Day postcards.
