Scarce Edition of a Tale of the Alhambra

Le Porteur d’Eau Espagnol, ou Le Trésor Enchanté, suivi de La Griffe du Diable, et l’Apparition au Cimetière. [Legend of the Moor’s Legacy.]

Troyes: Chez Baudot, Imprimieur-Libraire, (after 1832). First edition in French. Title page with a woodcut illustration. In publisher’s illustrated wrappers. 32 p. Edges chipped. Rear wrapper and last page slightly damaged. Overall in good condition.

First French edition of the story of the “Legend of the Moor’s Legacy” that was published first in 1832 in Washington Irving’s collection of essays the “Tales of the Alhambra”. The book was concurrently published in London, Philadelphia and Paris, and this story most likely have been pirated from the latter edition, translated into French and published in such format. The unrecognizable title and the lack of the author’s name on the wrappers and the title page also implies this, however the author’s name could be found at the end of the book, with a typo “Wasington Irving”.

Scarce book, WorldCat locates no copies in institutional holdings, however we could trace a copy in the collection of the George Peabody Library in Baltimore (in: Second Catalogue of the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, Including the Additions Made Since 1882. Vol. 1. Baltimore, 1896.)
