Beograd: Nadrealistička Izdanja (Globus), 1933. First edition. Text in Serbian. In original illustrated green wrappers, printed in red and black. (XI), (3), 3–33, (3) p. and 5 plates of photocollages. Cover slightly chipped at edges, slightly tanned at spine and the rear due to ageing. Pages browned at edges, a few spots and two tiny water stains with no effect on text or images. A small rectangle in red ink on the margin of the last plate, no effect on the image. Owner’s entries in stamp on half title, and in ink and stamp on title page. Overall a good copy.

This children’s book is created in the cooperation of the two surrealist artists Aleksandar Vučo and Dušan Matić. The story, written in poem, by Vučo, is about a little girl and a group of five boys imprisoned in a monastery. The surrealist photomontages (all together six: the cover and 5 plates), are by Matić, for which he photographed his sons Đorđe and Jovan. Matić is also responsible for the foreword of the book. The story was adapted into film in 1982.

Alexander Vučo (1897–1985) was a Serbian avant-garde writer and poet. Cofounder of the Belgrade Group of the Serbian Surrealists and editor of it’s almanac “Nemogucé - L’impossible” (1930).

Dušan Matić (1898–1980) was a Serbian poet and writer, he spent time in Paris in the 1920s where he became involved in the surrealist movement. He was the major theorist of Serbian Surrealist movement, published his writings in the most important avant-garde organs and he was one of the editors of the magazine “Svedočanstva” and, together with Vučo and Marko Ristić “Nemogucé - L’impossible.”

Extremely scarce publication of the surrealist movement. WorldCat locates only 2 copies worldwide, one in the US.
