Witkiewicz book that became a milestone in the theory of modern theatre.
Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885–1939) was a Polish avant-garde playwright, poet, painter and philosopher. In the 1920s he joined the avant-garde circles of Poland, and got closely associated with the “Formists”, the expressionist, cubist artistic and literary group. At this time he published his principles about modern theatre in this book. He professed the autonomy of the stage world, that functioning according to its own laws of internal composition.
