Joannis Sajnovics (János Sajnovics de Tordas et Káloz; 1733–1785) was a Hungarian linguist, the “father of comparative linguistics”. He was the first who demonstrated the genetic relationship between the Hungarian, Sámi (Lapp) and Finnish with grammatical comparisons, like correspondances in suffixes, declension of nouns, vers aspect, causatives, tense, pronouns and pronominal suffixes, parts of speech, and particles. His work became very influential and his methods were followed frequently in later linguistic works.
