First American edition of Napoleon's brother Louis Bonaparte’s novel.

This two-volume romance novel set in Holland was originally published under the title Marie ou les peines de l’amour in 1812, and in 1814 its revised edition appeared Marie, ou les Hollandoises. Louis Bonaparte (1778–1846) was Napoleon’s younger brother, appointed as the monarch of the Kingdom of Holland between 1806 and 1810.

The present copy belonged to Ten Eyck De Witt Veeder (1854–1923), born in Schenectady, New York, and served in the United States Navy with the rank of Commodore.
