Lasar Segall (1891–1957) the Lithuanian born, Brazilian Jewish painter. He studied in Vilna and Berlin where he joined the “Freie Sezession” group, the precursor movement of the German Expressionism. In the mid 1910s he exhibited in Brazil, he was among the earliest artists who presented modern art in the country. Segall was a founding member of “Dresdner Sezession Gruppe” in 1919 with Otto Dix and Conrad Felixmüller, but remained associated with the German Expressionsts. The illustrations of this book is one of his latest works in Europe as in the same year when Mayseh-bikhl was published, in 1923 he moved and settled down in Brazil.

The short stories are by David Bergelson (1884–1952) the Ukrainian-Soviet Yiddish writer, founder of the Kultur-Lige, the group of Yiddish speaking artists, writers and intellects whose aim was the creation of a new, avant-garde Yiddish culture.
