Josep Dalmau's Barcelona gallery played a key role in the promotion of avant-garde European artists at the beginning of the 20th century, organising exhibitions that have all made history, from the Cubists in 1912 to Angel Planells in 1930. Dalmau supported the publication of the first four issues of the journal 391 in early 1917, and dedicated an exhibition of Picabia's recent works in 1922. The 1920 exhibition of avant-garde French art, organized with the Parisian dealers Léonce Rosenberg and Georges Bernheim, was one of the most memorable.
