Budapest: Seidner Plakátgyár, (1919). Lithographic poster. 126 × 96 cm. Chipped edges. Mounted on japanese-paper.

Four figures of poor and hopeless proletarians in the foreground, a man sitting with his head in his right hand, and a sledgehammer laid to his leg, a little boy with a toy wagon, and two women desperately arguing with the two figures of the background, a wealthy peasant or “kulak” with his wife sit on a wagon filled up with a pig and poultry. The orange coloured text is overlaid and overlaying the image which gives the perspective of the composition. In this work Zádor combined the ominous and threatening atmosphere that was characteristic for the proletarian-art with the manner of the advertisement posters of its time to create this striking image.

István Zádor (1882–1963) was a Hungarian graphic artist and painter. He studied in Paris at École des Beaux-Art. He served as war correspondent who documented the actions in drawings during WWI and he continued with such reports of the time of the revolutions in Hungary in 1918–1919. He designed propaganda poster for the short lived Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, this is an example of such works.
