A scarce first edition of this early adaptation of Gulliver’s first voyage into Spanish.

An early translation, or rather an adaptation of Gulliver’s first voyage, his travel to Lilliput. The book was published without any references to the author, the translator, and reteller, the only allusion to Swift’s original story of Gulliver’s travels, is at the end of the book, a reference to a similar account of the trip of this ‘English surgeon’ to the land of ‘vivientes agigantados’ ('living giants'). The exact date of the publication is uncertain, the Cordoban printer Rafael Garcia Rodriguez was active between 1805 and 1844.

Historia is considered an early translation — however much it departs from the original — of Gulliver’s voyage to Lilliput into Spanish, which is only preceded by Ramón Máximo Spartal’s translation (from French) of the complete Gulliver’s Travels, published between 1793 and 1800.

Scarce, WorldCat locates six copies in institutional holdings, none in the US. Two-two copies are in Spain and Germany (BNE, Universitat Rovira i Virgili; SBB, BSB), and one-one in France and the UK (BnF, BL).
