Emanuel Swedenborg’s doctoral dissertation, his first publication.

Emanuel Swedenborg’s (1688–1772) the Swedish scientist, Christian mystic, philosopher, and theologian, graduated at the University of Uppsala where he studied mathematics, mineralogy, and natural philosophy. He took his degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1709 with the present thesis “Selected Sentences”, an annotated edition of maxims from Seneca, Publius Syrus, and others.

“Selected Sentences” is the first published work bear Swedenborg's name (then Swedberg). The book is dedicated to Emanuel’s father, Jesper Swedberg a prominent member of the Swedish clergy. The dissertation quotes sentences from classic writers on friendship, filial love, and the like, and these maxims are commented by Swedenborg, showing his early interest in human sentiments and reactions. The sentences are in alphabetical order from A to D, ending with the catchword "Effugere", however, the publication never continued.

A extremely scarce book on the market, no records on Rare Book Hub (Americana Exchange) and we could trace only two copies in American institutional holdings (Cornell University Library; Flora Lamson Hewlett Library), and seven in Europe (Sweden (4), Germany (3)).

Provenance: Presentation inscription by Olle Hjern to Theodore Pitcairn (1893–1973), the American clergyman, philanthropist, and art collector. Pitcairn studied in the school and the university of the New Church whose doctrine is based on Swedenborgian Christianity and he was the author of the book “My Lord and my God; Essays on Modern Religion, the Bible, and Emanuel Swedenborg”. Olle Hjern (1926–2016) was a New Church's pastor, author, and co-author of several essays and books on Swedenborg.
