Scarce first Polish edition of Marx’s “Das Kapital”.

Kapitał, the first Polish edition of Marx’s opus magnum was clandestinely translated and published by a circle of young Polish revolutionaries, among them one of the first Polish Marxists, the progressive economist, and sociologist Stanisław Krusiński (1857–1886), and the pioneer Polish sociologist and progressive Marxist intellect, Ludwik Krzywicki (1859–1941). Krzywicki was also the editor of the book and he was the one who obtained the rights of the publication from Engels, Marx’s authoritative successor, on January 28, 1884 (MEW 36, p. 93). Because of the censorship and repression in Poland Kapitał was published in Germany by Erazm Łukasz Kasprowicz (1835–1922), a Polish publisher of mostly political works, who owned a bookstore the Slavische Buchhandlung in Leipzig since 1864, and it was printed in Weimar in small printing establishment owned by Gustaf Uszman. Due to financial considerations, the book was published in three installments, between 1884 and 1886 (Andrusiewicz p. 98) and the copies were smuggled to Warsaw through Toruń. Krzywicki planned to publish the two remaining volumes of Das Kapital’s, but eventually, it has never happened.

Extremely scarce, we could trace only two copies in institutional holdings: in the National Library of Poland (Biblioteka Narodowa) and at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam.
