First French edition of las Casas’ chronicle of the first decades of colonization of the Americas.

Bartolomé de las Casas (1484–1566) was a Spanish colonist, Dominican missionary and an early historian of the Spanish colonization of the Americas. He was among the firsts who exposed the oppression of the Indians and called for the abolition of slavery. Las Casas arrived as one of the first European settlers in the Americas, and initially participated in the Conquista and the abuses against the Indians, but eventually, he became an advocator of the rights of the natives. He was the first officially appointed Protector of the Indians, and in 1544 became the Bishop of Chiapas in Guatemala. Las Casas is considered to be one of the first advocates for a universal conception of human rights.

La decouverte des Indes Occidentales is an abbreviated translation by abbé (Jean-Baptiste Morvan) de Bellegarde of the 1552 book, Brevissima relacion de la destruycion de las Indias (A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies), in which Las Casas detailed the mistreatment of the indigenous peoples.
