Mile Budak (1889–1945) was a Croatian writer and politician, the ideologists of the racist, ultranationalist and terrorist organization the Ustasha movement. During WWII, Budak besides serving as the chief propagandist of the Ustasha state became the Minister of Education and Faith, later the envoy to Nazi Germany and finally the Foreign Minister of the Independent State of Croatia, the fascist puppet state of the Third Reich.

The present copy of the German translation of Budak’s opus magnum Ognjište, a rural-themed, nationalist novel, is inscribed as a birthday present to Siegfried Kasche (1903–1947) SA-Obergruppenführer, who served as the Ambassador of Germany to the Independent State of Croatia between 1941 and 1945.
