Bruno Schulz (1892–1942) was a Polish-Jewish writer, literary critic and graphic artist who is regarded as one of the greatest Polish prosaists of the last century. His writings were regularly published in the magazine Skamander. This issue contains Schulz’s extensive essay on Witold Gombrowicz’s (1904–1969) first novel, Ferdydurke which was first published in 1938 with its cover designed by Schulz himself.

Skamander, published from 1920 to 1928, and again from 1935 to 1939, was the main organ of the eponymous Polish avant-garde literary group, founded around 1916. The Polish visual artist, illustrator and sculptor, Jadwiga Hładki-Wajwódowa (1904–1944) designed the covers of the magazine from its re-establishment in 1935.
