Early scientific paper on the ethnography and languages of the Canary Islands.

In his paper, Costa de Macedo examines and confutes James Cowles Prichard’s assumption that the Guanches, the aboriginal inhabitants of the Canary Isles are belonging to the same race as the Berbers of North Africa (which the first genome-wide data in 2017 has confirmed). Costa de Macedo claims that Guanches applies only to the inhabitants of Tenerife, and not the natives of the other Canary Islands, which were inhabited by different nations, speaking different languages.

Joaquim José da Costa de Macedo (1777–1867) was a public servant of the Portugues Crown in various positions and member of several scientific societies, among them the Royal Academy of Sciences (Real Academia das Ciencias) at Lisbon, since 1814, and he served as its perpetual secretary between 1835 and 1856.
