Association copy of Le Père’s memoir about his survey regarding the possibility of constructing the Suez canal. Inscribed twice, to subsequent State Councilors, Louis Becquey and Louis-Mathieu Molé.

Jacques-Marie Le Père (1763–1841), Napoleon’s chief lines-of-communication engineer was commissioned to investigate the possibility of building a canal from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea via the isthmus of Suez after French officers had discovered remnants of the ancient "Canal of the Pharaohs” during the 1798 Campaign in Egypt. After levelling he isthmus, Le Pére came to the conclusion, that locks would be needed to create the canal. He presented his findings to Napoleon in 1803, who suspended the project due to its expenses. The present book summarizes Le Père’s works and also includes the final, 1814 report on his survey by general inspectors of the royal corps of bridges and roads, Prony, Sganzin and Tarbé.

When Paul Adrien Bourdaloue (1798–1868) made new studies for a canal in 1847, Le Pére’s measurements turned out to be incorrect, probably due to the lack of water and continuous Bedouin attacks. Despite his calculations being erroneous, Le Pére's report was an important basis for Ferdinand de Lesseps' later plans for the actual Suez Canal.

Louis Becquey (1760–1849), to whom Le Père inscribed his book, was a high-ranking official under the Bourbon Restoration. He was appointed State Councilor in 1814 and named Directeur général des Ponts & Chaussées et des Mines (General Director of Bridges and Roads, and of Mines) in 1817. Supposedly Le Pére originally addressed his book to Becquey’s predecessor, Louis-Mathieu Molé (1781–1855), who served in this position from 1815, hence the inked-out inscription on the title page.
